Carol Whitfield-Matthews

Choir Director/Organist

Carol has spent many years in church music ministry and believes that it is God’s call on her heart and life.  Her passion lies in organ and choral music and the rich traditions of the Church, but she has also worked to bring more contemporary music to her repertoire. A native of the Philadelphia PA, area she is a graduate of Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove PA, with a degree in Music Education and has done graduate work at Pennsylvania State University, Bloomsburg State University, Westfield State University, and South Florida School for Theological Studies.  She studied organ with Elizabeth Strine, Karl Moyer and James Boeringer.

In addition to her church work, Carol also serves as a substitute teacher for both Manatee and Sarasota Counties and directs the Key of Sea Chorus during the winter season.  She is member of the Board of Directors for the Pops Orchestra and is a former member of the board of the American Guild of Organists.

Carol is widowed, has one daughter, Denise, and two grandchildren, Jake and Abby.  She enjoys creating in the kitchen in her spare time.  Her favorite scripture verses are  Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” and Ephesians 3:20: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
